CONNECTING BANGLADESH TO THE WORLD

As one of the world’s fastest growing economies, Bangladesh is making great strides to connect to new markets through a variety of modernisation projects. These projects will propel Bangladesh’s growth as a major player in the global marketplace and better the lives of the Bangladeshi people.

One key initiative is the Bay Terminal at the Port of Chittagong (now known as Chattogram). The Bay Terminal will comprise two container terminals and one multipurpose terminal.

The development of the Bay Terminal will enhance the major gateway for Bangladesh’s trade with world markets by improving the quality of services and offering innovative facilities that augment the capacity of the existing Chittagong Port. In addition, the new port aims to enhance competitiveness of the country’s exports by reducing shipping and logistics lead time and associated supply chain costs.

PSA is committed to work closely with the Government of Bangladesh to participate and invest in the future Chattogram Bay Terminal Project. PSA has embarked on a feasibility study and we continue to work closely alongside the Bangladesh Ministry of Shipping, Public Private Partnership Authority and Chattogram Port Authority to make progress on this iconic project. Once completed, the Bay Terminal will create a sustainable and resilient global supply chain and port logistics hub, through which local businesses and communities can prosper alongside Bangladesh’s booming economy.

PSA Partners with International Finance Corporation (IFC) Towards Bay Terminal Project in Bangladesh

PSA is deepening our relationship with IFC, bringing in the best resources and expertise to support the development of the Bay Terminal project in Bangladesh. On 30th Aug 2021, PSA and IFC signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA), formalising a partnership that will bring in IFC’s expertise as a global development finance institution (DFI), to augment PSA’s capabilities in global port management and development, and contribute towards the success of the project. IFC’s experience in addressing environmental and social risks as well as PSA’s focus on sustainability will allow the project to be aligned with Bangladesh’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Deployment of advanced container terminal gate system that employs optical character recognition (OCR) to identify container trucks and containers for matching with pre-approved submitted data for paperless clearance.

Taller and Faster Quay Cranes
Taller and Faster Quay Cranes

Quayside gantry cranes with greater lifting height and longer outreach will ensure the larger vessels calling at the terminal will be served with the best productivity. These steel behemoths will incorporate twin-lift technology and intelligent crane control systems to optimise the hoist, trolley and gantry motions for smooth, safe and productive container handling between vessel and shore.

Low-emission electric RTGs
Low-emission electric RTGs

Smooth and productive container handling operations at the quayside need to be complemented with similar productivity in the yard. A fleet of low-emission electric RTGs will ensure that despite round-the-clock operations to provide seamless connections to the quayside and stacking in the yard, their lower greenhouse gas and particulate matter emissions will ensure air quality is preserved. Regenerative electricity can also be fed back to the power grid to reduce power wastage.

PSA PROJECT SHOWCASE

TUAS, SINGAPORE

Tuas Port is anticipated to be the world’s largest fully-automated terminal. Designed to meet and exceed the future demands of the world’s largest mega-vessels, mega-alliances and mega-networks, it represents the future and will have a capacity of handling 65 million TEUs annually. The project challenges designs beyond the physical port, into complementary logistics capabilities and integrated digital systems. Transforming the industry to deliver holistic cargo solutions to customers, promoting higher supply chain efficiencies.

The project will showcase intelligent data-driven operation management systems, wharf and yard automation, full-electric automated guided vehicles, smart engineering and power management platforms. These will serve as innovations to reach new levels of efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The first berths are scheduled to commence operations in 2021, with the entire project due to complete by the 2040s.

MUMBAI, INDIA

India’s largest container terminal, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt Ltd (PSA Mumbai) is a subsidiary of PSA International. Located in Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra, its Phase 1 development boasts a 1,000-metre berth, a fleet size of 12 quay cranes, and a capacity of 2.4 million TEUs. PSA undertook the construction of this greenfield project, inclusive of land formation and commissioning of superstructure and completed the challenging project ahead of schedule, commencing operations in Feb 2018. It achieved its milestone two millionth TEU in January 2021.

A Phase 2 expansion is currently underway and is expected to be operational by the end of 2022. This will bring total capacity of the terminal up to 4.8 million TEUs, with a land area of 200 hectares.

Similar to the location of Bay Terminal, PSA Mumbai will consolidate Mumbai’s position as the premier seaport gateway for India and elevate it to be an international hub of call. PSA Mumbai is both a milestone in India’s port infrastructure development to support its ‘Vision 2022’ and a crucial sea node that will facilitate the movement of global trade and commerce.

DAMMAM, SAUDI ARABIA

On 1 October 2020, Saudi Global Ports (SGP), one of PSA International’s subsidiaries, has assumed management of both the First and Second Container Terminals in King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam (KAPD). This makes SGP the sole container terminal operator of the port.

This consolidation was completed in 6 months following SGP’s securing of the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement with Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) for both the First and Second Container Terminals in the King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam in April 2020, following sterling performance by SGP since commencing operations of the Second Container terminal in 2015.

Mawani and SGP have worked closely on various activities including manpower retention, transfer of assets, engagement of the port community and collaboration with stakeholders. In addition to the transfer of equipment from Mawani, SGP has advanced the purchase and commissioning of more than 200 new handling equipment to facilitate smooth operations at both terminals. The consolidation is set to revolutionise the port into a leading mega container hub, with modern and robust infrastructure that will be able to handle an estimated capacity of 7.5 million TEUs annually.
